July Badgers 2020

July 2020 Badgers in Maximus Woods

Please wait for Videos to load.

July brought Us the Joy of the Badgers to our Trail Cam

It was wonderful when two Badgers entered the Clearing where our Trail cam was located.
Previously in June we had one fleeting gimps of a Badger proving that Badgers still exist in Maximus Wood.

There is a Man made Disused Badger sett in Maximus Wood and everyone thought there were no more Badgers living in the Woodland. This is not the case as our Camera has picked them up.

Though the Badgers are not using the man made Sett for Obvious reasons as it has been placed slap bang next to a busy foot path in the wood. Don't know what the Council were thinking building it in such a daft place.

The Badgers were clearly not impressed with it so Built there own Elsewhere within Easy access of the Woodland. Clever Badgers !

These two badgers are enjoying the free meal of Seed and Cat Biscuits,
giving Us a close up look of them as they feed.

Badgers like the Foxes are Omnivores and eat a variety of food items.
One of there favorite main foods are Earth worms. We have had a good look around Maximus wood and have found many spots where Badgers have clearly been digging for Worms.

Badgers have very poor eyesight and rely on their sense of smell
and hearing as they go about there daily business

Badgers are protected by Law and so are there Setts.
The main threat to them in Maximus wood are Dogs roaming around off leads of which there are many.
Sadly to many Dog owner let there dogs run around off the lead. Which causes disturbance to the Wildlife.

The Badger in this clip enjoys a bit of a scratch while eating

Unlike the fox which was rooting about delicately with its nose the Badger is a bit more forceful and determined while foraging through the leaf litter pushing branched out of the way

The Badger wanders off out from the Clearing

The Badger has returned and if you listen carefully you can hear him munching on the bits of food that he has foraged in the leaf litter

You can even hear him sniffing the ground as he is feeding

I always though that Badgers had short stumpy tails but as you can clearly see there tails are quite long almost touching the ground

They are quite short and stocky animals about the size of a Scottish Terrier with long claws for Digging

you can just about see his long claws just before he wanders off again

Our Badger friend has returned in front of the camera

You can see that they do have some Big canine teeth and they can defend themselves if threatened
I remember years ago walking down a dark alleyway heading home from the pub.
When I saw a large grey animal running towards me making a hell of a racket. Thinking it was a dog going to bite me! But it was a Badger and he ran past me at some pace Made me Jump I can tell ya!

We are lucky to get a third visit to the camera with this fella

A bit camera shy in this shot

That's better now we are getting a better view of the Badger

Think he has heard something maybe the foxes are coming back?

Maybe not as he settles down to foraging again! how about a game of shove the leaf around.

Definitely something interesting under that leaf

He's tucking in to his food Tonight!

showing off his tail again or has he gone shy on Us?

Not going to look at the camera !

That's better now we can see what you are up too!

He has found something he likes in though's roots of the tree

Maybe there's some worms or slugs over there?

Definitely worth a last investigation before he goes!
